Thank you for your interest in mentoring a scholar who is participating in one of the three Center for Excellence in Public Health Leadership (Center for Excellence) programs. This year Center for Excellence summer programs are planned to be in-person.
The two graduate scholar programs are Ferguson RISE Fellowship (6-Month, 12-Month & Summer program for graduate scholars) and EMURG in Health Leaders Fellowship (12-month program with placement in one of the Department of Health and Human Services agencies for graduate school and recent Master’s and Doctoral Degree scholars) and the one undergraduate scholars programs are MCHC/RISE-UP (summer program for undergraduate junior, seniors and post-baccalaureate scholars).Our federal funders request that interested mentors and preceptors fill out a brief questionnaire and provide a description of their clinical, research, community engagement and advocacy experience that they will provide for the student. Graduate Student Program:
Dr. James A. Ferguson Emerging Infectious Diseases (RISE) Fellowship
The Dr. James A. Ferguson Emerging Infectious Diseases (RISE) Fellowship is a 12-Month and Summer public health research fellowship for graduate students, including medical, dental, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, public health and social sciences who are interested in research in infectious diseases and/or health promotion, mental health, substance abuse, developmental disabilities, child trauma, maternal and child health, etc. Graduate students present their research at the end of the summer and are sponsored to present their work at APHA or other national scientific meetings.

Undergraduate Program:
Student Enhancement-Undergraduate Program (MCHC/RISE-UP)
MCHC/RISE-UP is a program for undergraduate juniors, seniors, and scholars within 12 months of receiving their baccalaureate degree. MCHC/RISE-UP is located at (1) Kennedy Krieger Institute partnering with faculty at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Bloomberg School of Public Health, School of Nursing and HBCU’s (2) Aaniiih Nakoda College, (3) University of California-Davis, and (4) University of South Dakota partnering with Tribal Serving Institutions. MCHC/RISE-UP Scholars may participate in up to two of three public health leadership tracks, namely (1) clinical, (2) research, and (3) community engagement and advocacy. MCHC/RISE-UP scholars present their work at JHU CARES at the end of the summer.
