Millersville Elementary School

Recent Highlights:

The School Programs at Kennedy Krieger Institute has been named a 2012 Leadership and Innovation in Special Education Awardee by the National Association of Private Special Education Centers (NAPSEC).

Program Overview:

The Kennedy Krieger Institute maintains a Type II partnership with Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) that offers a unique special education and related service program for eligible students in Millersville Elementary School (MES). This program provides early intervention for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) in kindergarten and first grade.

Although the program operates in space provided in the school, it retains its identity as Kennedy Krieger Institute. The students in the program are integrated into general education activities to the greatest extent possible. This includes physical education, music and art. All resources of the school, such as the library/media center and cafeteria are available to KKI students in this program. Students are referred to the program by the nonpublic Central IEP team of AACPS. The program is only available to students who are residents of Anne Arundel County.

Instruction and Assessment of Progress:

Instruction in grade level curriculum is supported by goals and objectives on students’ Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and is aligned with Maryland State Department of Education’s Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards and AACPS Curriculum. The class size is small, with instruction provided by a teacher and teaching assistants. Technology is integrated in instruction to advance and promote effective, interactive learning.

The program’s instruction follows the Anne Arundel County Public Schools’ curriculum and pacing guides and provides opportunities for Type II students to be integrated into general education activities to the greatest extent possible. A strong emphasis on social thinking is embedded into every aspect of the program using evidence-based materials that align to the National Standards Project in ASD.

Positive Behavior Intervention:

Students are provided a high level of behavioral support when transitioning to and from, and participating in all class activities. All school staff members are trained in positive behavioral interventions. A Behavior Specialist works in the classroom to reinforce positive, on task behaviors.
