Child and Family Therapy Clinic Externship

The Child and Family Therapy (CFT) Clinic, directed by Dr. Gina Richman, offers an externship training experience in providing evidence-based interventions for children, adolescents and young adults and their families.

The CFT externship experience provides training in using a family approach to delivering evidence-based interventions. Externs receive clinical training addressing parent-child conflict, executive dysfunction (e.g., ADHD), behavioral concerns, anxiety, and emotional dysregulation. In addition, trainees will learn to successfully navigate an academic medical center and will consult with professionals within the hospital (e.g., psychiatrists and speech therapists) as well as community providers (e.g., pediatricians and teachers). Didactic training and supervision will be provided in foundational clinical skills, evidence-based modalities to support increased skill and flexibility with common presenting concerns, as well as professional development (e.g., obtaining an internship). Externs will be well equipped to provide individual and family therapy for a wide array of externalizing and internalizing concerns in childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood. Finally, externs will gain experience as clinical scientists administering assessment at the outset of care as well as standardized measures during treatment to monitor clinical progress and outcomes.

  • CFT Extern required workdays include Monday and Wednesday to facilitate face-to-face supervision with a supervisor, observations and co-treatment of cases, participation in clinic meetings as well as cross-cohort trainings.
