Motion Analysis Lab Member: Andrew Long, M.S.

Andrew LongDoctoral Student

Andrew received his bachelor's and master's degree in mechanical engineering from Northwestern University. He is pursuing a Ph.D. degree in biomedical engineering at Johns Hopkins University in Dr. Amy Bastian's Motion Analysis Laboratory in the Kennedy Krieger Institute.

Andy's thesis project focuses on understanding how the human brain learns new walking patterns. Learning to move your body to develop new skills depends on many types of learning, including instructive, reinforcement, and adaptive learning, but little is known about how these learning mechanisms interact. His research aim is to advance the understanding of how these learning mechanisms should be combined to enhance the learning of new walking patterns in healthy adults and patients with cerebral stroke. The results of these studies will lay the foundation for designing rehabilitation strategies for people with walking disorders.
