About Our Sleep Lab:
Our technologists have extensive experience working with children with disabilities and take pride in working with families to ensure the study is recorded successfully. As a result, we have a high rate of success recording studies, even on children who have behavioral challenges and/or anxiety, and who have not been able to tolerate a study in the past. Our physicians are board-certified in child neurology, sleep medicine, and clinical neurophysiology. They work collaboratively with the referring provider to obtain the most pertinent information from the studies, so that your child's provider can make the best-informed decisions possible.
We offer the following services to children and young adults in a child-friendly and developmentally appropriate setting:
- “Sleep Study“ or Diagnostic Polysomnogram (PSG): A recording made during sleep to evaluate sleep disorders.
- Titration Polysomnogram: A recording made during sleep that tests the effectiveness of different treatments. Treatment types may include CPAP, BiPAP, oxygen, high humidity high flow, or hypoglossal serve stimulation.
- Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT): A nap study performed during daytime hours that determines how quickly a child will fall asleep in quiet situations.
- Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT): A daytime study used to evaluate a person’s ability to stay awake.
Professional Referrals:
Although most of the lab's patients come from internal referrals, we do perform PSGs at the request of outside physicians or other medical clinicians. We are happy to perform PSGs on children or individuals who have disabilities.
In order to refer a patient for a PSG:
- Place the order in Kennedy Krieger Epic CareLink
- Submit a referral online
- Call (443) 923-9386
If the patient has been seen at Kennedy Krieger previously, then there is nothing further that you need to do. We will let you know when the patient has been scheduled and will send the report when it is complete. If the patient has never previously been seen at Kennedy Krieger, then the parent or guardian will have to go through the intake process. The parent/guardian can contact Kennedy Krieger Intake at (443) 923-9400, or—if you give us the patient's name and phone number—our Intake department will be happy to contact the family.
Please note that there must be an identified provider who will be able to follow-up the results with the family. Per standard practice, we send the report to the referring clinician; we do not discuss or interpret the results with the patient or family. If your patient needs a neurology or other medical appointment in addition to the PSG, please let us know at the time you make the referral.
