Incredible Opportunities to Build Your Career
A recent survey invited 21 SLPs at the Institute to share why they chose to work at Kennedy Krieger and why they have stayed. Their answers provide insight into the remarkable characteristics of this organization, the people who work here, and the patients, students and families they serve.
A commonly cited benefit of employment at the Institute is the chance to work with such a large, knowledgeable and dedicated group of SLPs. With representation in programs across the Institute, SLPs play important roles in the evaluation and treatment of patients and students with complex needs. SLPs appreciate the sense of community and continuity at Kennedy Krieger, as well as the respect afforded them.
About one-third (29%) of the SLPs participating in the survey shared that the ability to evaluate and treat challenging and diverse patient populations makes Kennedy Krieger a workplace of choice, while two-thirds (67%) commented on the importance of continuing to learn and grow professionally.
The Speech-Language Pathology Department’s goals include recruiting, training and retaining dedicated and committed SLPs. Faced with an increasing demand for services and recent shortages of SLPs, the department has developed a new role: clinical discipline recruiter. The recruiter works closely with Human Resources and hiring managers across the Institute to coordinate all phases of recruiting and hiring SLPs. And because many newly hired SLPs were recently Clinical Fellows, the department has ensured that there are enough supervisory-level SLPs on its staff to mentor SLPs just starting out in their careers.
