About

Dhinakaran (“Dhina”) Chinappen is a research associate faculty member in Neurology at Kennedy Krieger Institute and the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Education:

He completed postdoctoral training at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School and earned his PhD in Computational Neuroscience at Boston University. He previously received a Master of Engineering from Cornell University and undergraduate degrees in Bioengineering and Economics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Research Summary:

His research examines electrophysiological markers of epilepsy using human intracranial and non-invasive scalp recordings. His research has involved examining electrophysiological features of epileptiform discharges and sleep-related oscillations in epilepsy. He also contributes to collaborative studies investigating sensory gating, and closed-loop auditory stimulation during sleep.

Before pursuing doctoral training, Dr. Chinappen worked in biomedical engineering in industry, where he contributed to the development of FDA-cleared EEG and MRI clinical decision-support systems. His research interests focus on quantitative approaches to electrophysiological biomarkers and their relationship to cognition in epilepsy.
