What’s the difference between a neuropsychological and a psychological assessment?
In general, children seen for neuropsychological evaluation have some underlying medical diagnosis and are typically referred by their physician. The child might have been born with a problem in the way the brain formed and grew, might have a medical condition involving the brain (e.g., epilepsy, brain tumor, stroke), or a medical illness with a direct or indirect effect on the brain. Sometimes the child might have sustained a head injury or other trauma or have a genetic condition. Children without major medical complexity, but who have trouble with behavior, learning, attention, or mood are seen for psychological evaluation.
How long does an evaluation last?
Depending on the referral question and the child’s age, services range from a 1-hour telehealth visit to up to 6 hours of in-person evaluation.
Is my insurance going to cover the cost of the evaluation?

Do I need to provide any information ahead of the evaluation?
*You must provide any written custody-related documentation in advance of the visit.
It is extremely helpful when families provide information in advance of their child’s visit. If you have copies of your child’s school records (such as IEP or 504 Plans), any previous testing reports (psychoeducational or neuropsychological testing through the school system, private providers, or another hospital), or other outside medical records (not from Johns Hopkins or Kennedy Krieger).
You will receive a link to a pre-visit questionnaire that we use to match your child with the best provider. Please complete this before the visit, even if you already know what provider your child will be seeing, because it gives us a lot of useful information that helps make the visit shorter.
