Transforming the Future for Children with Brain Injuries

Every child with a brain injury deserves the chance to recover, thrive, and reclaim their future. Few leaders have done more to make this vision a reality than Dr. Beth Slomine, an internationally recognized expert whose pioneering clinical programs, groundbreaking research and exceptional mentorship have transformed the field of pediatric brain injury recovery.

For over 25 years, Dr. Slomine has been at the forefront of pediatric brain injury research. Her work explores how brain injuries affect a child’s cognition, mental health, behavior and daily functioning. The innovative tools she has developed measure that recovery with precision.

By identifying early indicators of progress, Dr. Slomine empowers families and clinicians to predict outcomes more accurately and tailor treatment plans to each child’s unique needs. Her research doesn’t just track recovery, it helps shape it and the science, care and workforce that will guide the next generation of discoveries. Leading the Way in Pediatric Brain Injury Research At the heart of Dr. Slomine’s research is a commitment to providing clarity and guidance for families navigating the long-term recovery journey after pediatric brain injury. Her vision is to ensure that each child receives evidence-based, individualized care to maximize their recovery and participation in their home, school and community.

Innovative Program Builder

For almost three decades, Dr. Slomine has built model programs for pediatric brain injury, including the Center for Brain Injury Recovery. With the center, she co-founded programs at both ends of the brain injury spectrum, including the Concussion Clinic (for children with mild brain injury) and the Responsiveness Program (for children with the most severe brain injuries). The programs serve patients from nearly every U.S. state and multiple countries worldwide.

Mentoring the Next Generation of Global Experts

Dedicating her career to guiding and inspiring pediatric brain injury clinicians and scientists across the country and world, Dr. Slomine led the only U.S. program in pediatric neuropsychology at internship and residency levels from 2009 to 2020. Today, the more than 125 Kennedy Krieger doctoral interns and postdoctoral fellows she trained lead clinical and academic programs worldwide.

Her focus on professional development and training and an interdisciplinary approach to brain injury care and research have helped to shape education and practice standards in the field of neuropsychology. Dr. Slomine has developed and refined national training guidelines, particularly in pediatric neurorehabilitation and neurocritical care.

Securing the Future for Children with Brain Injuries

Dr. Slomine’s global leadership is advancing the standards for pediatric brain injury research and treatment. Her work is guided by a clear and deeply held purpose: Finding the answers that shape lasting outcomes and transform the care—and future—for children with brain injuries. Her research has become the benchmark for assessing, treating and supporting children in recovery, offering clarity and hope to families during critical times.

Establishing an endowed chair in her name at Kennedy Krieger Institute dramatically expands Dr. Slomine’s impact and research opportunities. Endowed funds support her groundbreaking innovation and accelerate the development of new, needed treatments and assessment tools.

Endowment support enables Dr. Slomine, an internationally trusted and sought-after mentor, to enhance the Institute’s world-class training in clinical rehabilitation neuropsychology and interdisciplinary brain injury rehabilitation research. Her expert training and compassionate example will continue to shape the next generation of pediatric neuropsychologists and brain injury clinicians and scientists, ensuring that the field has the resources and expertise needed to improve outcomes for children with brain injuries for decades to come.

Families of children with brain injuries often ask what they can expect—now, five years from now and even a decade into the future. My research is dedicated to answering that question, so children, families and providers have a clearer understanding of the recovery journey and the key factors that influence long-term outcomes.” – Dr. Beth Slomine
