About
Dr. Rajapillai Pillai is a child neurologist specializing in neurodevelopmental disabilities and a developmental neuropsychiatry scholar at Kennedy Krieger’s Department of Psychiatry. He is an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Education
Dr. Pillai completed his undergraduate training at Yale University and his MD/PhD at Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University, with a doctorate in Neuroscience. He completed his preliminary pediatric training at University of Massachusetts Chan School of Medicine, Baystate Campus, followed by a residency in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities at Boston Children’s Hospital, where he was chief resident of Child Neurology.
Research Summary
Dr. Pillai’s research interests lie in the intersection of mental health and neurodevelopmental disorders. His prior research includes examining perception of faces in autism with functional MRI and evaluating the role of the serotonin 1A receptors in major depressive disorder using positron emission tomography. He has also published on mental health, environmental exposures, and developmental profiles in various neurodevelopmental disorders. His current research direction involves using neuromodulation techniques to evaluate and treat emotional and behavioral disturbances in individuals with severe neurodevelopmental disabilities.
