About

Dr. Catherine Chu is a distinguished leader in pediatric neurology and is the vice president of Child Neurology at Kennedy Krieger Institute. She is also serving as the director of Pediatric Neurology and the John M. Freeman Pediatric Epilepsy Center at Johns Hopkins. A highly respected child neurologist, epileptologist and clinical neurophysiologist, Dr. Chu is internationally recognized for her expertise in epilepsy and neurodevelopmental disorders. Her clinical and research work focuses on seizure localization, EEG analysis, surgical planning and neuromodulation for patients with treatment-resistant epilepsy.

Education

Dr. Chu earned both her medical degree and a master’s degree in social anthropology from Harvard University. She completed her pediatric internship at Massachusetts General Hospital, followed by a residency in neurology and child neurology at Massachusetts General and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She further specialized through fellowships in epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology at Massachusetts General. Dr. Chu also holds a master’s degree in medical science with a focus on clinical investigation from Harvard Medical School.

Research Summary

Dr Chu’s primary research focus is in identifying, understanding and treating brain rhythms that contribute to seizures and cognitive symptoms in epilepsy. She also collaborates in multicenter studies to increase knowledge in rare populations. She also works with industry to discover neurophysiological biomarkers to accelerate treatments in neurodevelopmental disorders
