The Kennedy Krieger Institute maintains a Type II partnership with Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) that offers a unique special education and related service program for eligible students in Southern High School (SHS). This program is for students in grades 9-12 who are seeking a Maryland high school diploma. The program is approved by the Maryland State Department of Education.
Although the program operates in space provided in the school, and retains its identity as Kennedy Krieger Institute, students have the flexibility of being integrated into the general curriculum offerings of SHS as they are able to handle the rigor of each subject. For instance, a student may attend a math or social studies class with other SHS students, but return to the Kennedy Krieger program for assistance in subjects in which they need more intensive assistance, such as science or English.
The students in the program are included in all aspects of student life at SHS and attend physical education, music, art, and vocational education programs with the SHS students. All resources of the school, such as the library and cafeteria are available to KKI students in this program. Vocational programming is offered at the Career and Technology Center that is used by high schools in the southern part of the county (CAT-south). They are transported there along with other SHS students.
Students are referred to the program by the IEP team of AACPS. The program is only available to students who are residents of Anne Arundel County.
Instruction and Assessment of Progress:
Instruction in grade level curriculum is supported by goals and objectives on students’ Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and is aligned with Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards and AACPS Curriculum. Class size is small, with instructional support from teachers and a teaching assistant. Technology for instruction is also provided with computers to advance and promote effective learning.
Students who receive instruction through KKI also receive instruction in general education content and elective classes. All students participate in state and district-wide assessments. Additionally, formal and informal benchmark assessments are used to determine progress in curricular and IEP goals. This progress is reported on the quarterly report cards shared with students and their families.
The program is designed to serve students who are working toward a high school diploma from Anne Arundel County Public Schools.
Positive Behavior Intervention:
Students are provided a high level of behavioral support when transitioning to and from, and participating in all class activities. All school staff members are trained in positive behavioral interventions.
- Students participate in all SHS sports teams, including football, basketball, lacrosse, field hockey, softball, baseball and track and field.
