For 30 years, the Specialized Transition Program (STP) at Kennedy Krieger Institute has provided comprehensive neurorehabilitation for children who need intensive therapeutic care but do not require hospitalization. STP offers a range of physical and cognitive rehabilitation services for neurological and orthopedic conditions, along with educational support.

Your donation today helps children regain hope and independence as they transition back to their home lives.

Celebrate 30 Years of Impact:

STP offers year-round treatment for patients aged 2 to 24, predominantly between the ages of 2 and 12, with various diagnoses like traumatic brain injuries and developmental disabilities.

Each patient receives a personalized rehabilitation plan, which typically last about 31 days, and patients will participate in therapy for up to four hours daily. Our focus is on improving communication, cognitive skills and daily living activities through physical and occupational therapies.

Since 1995, we have:

Treated over 3,500 patients Offered over 228,000 appointments Hired over 80 staff members

As we celebrate the past 30 years of impact, we are already looking forward to a future where more children can confidently return to their daily activities. To better meet the needs of our patients, we have an ambitious plan:

Expansion of Therapeutic Gym Spaces
We will renovate our facility to create a second therapeutic gym, allowing us to serve more patients each year. This expansion will include the installation of upgraded, specialized equipment tailored to the diverse ages and needs of our patients.

  • One gym will be dedicated to younger children, offering age-appropriate tools for early development.
  • The second gym will support older patients with more advanced therapeutic needs.

Classroom Redesign for Educational Readiness
Our current classroom will be redesigned into a modernized learning space that simulates a traditional school environment. This will help patients transition more smoothly back to school by:

  • Supporting cognitive and social development.
  • Providing structured educational opportunities during treatment.
  • Encouraging confidence and independence in a classroom-like setting.

Accessible Bathroom Renovation and Expansion
We will renovate and expand our bathroom facilities to accommodate larger wheelchairs and mobility devices. This space plays a vital role in teaching patients essential life skills, including:

  • Independent toileting and hygiene routines.
  • Building confidence in daily self-care activities.

To enhance the therapeutic environment and improve patient and staff experience, we plan to implement general updates throughout the facility, including:

  • Updated Flooring and Paint: Fresh, modern finishes will brighten the space and create a more welcoming, calming atmosphere for patients and families.
  • New Equipment: Replacing outdated tools and furnishings with modern, functional equipment to support high-quality care and therapy.
  • Splinting Room Redesign: A redesign of the splinting room to improve workflow, increase comfort, and ensure the space meets the evolving needs of our patients and clinicians.

These updates will help us create a more efficient, uplifting and patient-centered environment and your donation will allow us to expand this important work. Together, we can achieve even greater things!

Your donation today helps children regain hope and independence as they transition back to their lives.
