Patient Billing Information
We know how complicated the billing process can be and want to help you understand how we handle billing and payment at Kennedy Krieger Institute.
Admission
We ask you to provide your insurance information prior to receiving services at Kennedy Krieger Institute. If Kennedy Krieger has a contract with your insurer, we will verify your benefits, obtain authorizations and inform you of services not covered by your insurance plan. Remember that you will be responsible for any balance due after your insurance has paid, including co-payments, deductibles and co-insurance amounts.
An authorization from your insurance company is not a guarantee of payment. We recommend that you contact your insurance company before any visit to learn what services your plan covers and whether you will be responsible for any part of the payment.
If your insurance company does not have a contract with Kennedy Krieger, we will provide you with an estimate of the cost of services that you will be required to pay at the time of service.
Billing
Charges are generated for the services you receive. For outpatient services, providers utilize a "charge ticket" -- a checklist of each service provided, along with the relevant diagnosis. You may request a copy of the charge ticket when you check out from the clinic. If Kennedy Krieger is contracted with your insurance company, we will submit valid health insurance claims directly to your primary payer and, if appropriate, your secondary insurance payer. You will only be billed for outstanding balances not paid by your insurance company. In some instances, we may notify you and ask that you contact your insurance company on our behalf.
Types of Bills
You may receive separate bills for hospital and physician services. The following is a list of the types of bills a patient might receive:
- Inpatient Hospital Bill: The inpatient hospital bill covers the period from the admission date through the discharge date. A separate bill is generated for each separate admission. Kennedy Krieger Institute has a comprehensive daily rate that includes all room charges, as well as most services provided by our interdisciplinary team. However, there might be a separate bill for some laboratory and radiology tests.
- Outpatient Hospital Bill: The outpatient hospital bill covers the use of the facility, therapy visits, and any tests or procedures performed at the time of your visit.
- Physician or Professional Bill: A physician or professional bill covers professional services rendered both to outpatients and to inpatients. This bill will be provided by Kennedy Krieger Associates, Inc.

It is our policy to collect all amounts owed in advance of providing services. We accept the following forms of payment:
