Role of acyl-CoA synthetases in lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM)

LAM is characterized by proliferation of smooth muscle cells in the lung. SLC27A3 is an acyl-CoA synthetase whose activity seems to be increased in rapidly proliferating cells. The fundamental question to be answered is, compared to smooth muscle cells in normal lung, is the expression of SLC27A3 and thus its enzyme activity increased in tissue from LAM patients?

Dr. Joel Moss, Deputy Chief, Translational Medicine Branch, NHLBI, NIH, has requested that my laboratory conduct immunological studies and enzyme assays on coded/traceable samples from patients with LAM and control samples. All tissues were collected by Dr. Moss, the provider. The identities of patients are known only to Dr. Moss. Only coded samples will be provided to the P.I. The P.I. has no access to patient data other than the code number of the sample.

Results of immunological analyses and enzyme assays will be reported only to Dr. Moss.
