The Association Between Lean Body Mass and Functional Outcomes in Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury

Principal Investigator:
Cristina
Sadowsky

What is the correlation between lean body mass (LBM) and functional outcome in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI)? We plan to determine the association between (LBM) and functional outcomes as measured by the Spinal Cord Independence Measure (SCIM) in individuals with SCI. We plan to conduct a cross-sectional, retrospective review of an IRB-approved clinical outcomes database (IRB number: NA-00044087), which consists of 1,525 individuals of all ages with either traumatic or non-traumatic SCI, who were treated as outpatients at the International Center for Spinal Cord (ICSCI) at any time since 2005.

We will be analyzing date of birth, date of injury, sex, race, cause of injury, neurological level of injury, height, weight, body mass index, and SCIM scores extracted from this database. Additionally, in order to examine the relationship of LBM on SCIM, we will be reviewing past DEXA scan results from electronic health records of the patients identified from the clinical outcomes data base in order to obtain LBM and fat mass percentages.
