Assessment of Medical and Surgical Aspects of Cardiovascular Disease in OI

Principal Investigator:
Jay
Shapiro

Current information about cardiovascular disease in OI children or adults has not been systematically evaluated: the real incidence of valvular or aortic disease or atherosclerotic risk or is unknown. Also, information about current cardiac surgical techniques or surgical outcomes applicable to OI patients is fragmented or limited to mainly valvular disease. We propose that this study will, for the first time,

a) categorize cardiac/vascular involvement and
b) assess current surgical treatments so that aspects of cardiovascular disease in OI can be better understood.

We propose that this new information may ultimately establish a standard of cardiac care for OI patients which can then be used by physicians in their evaluations, both medical and surgical, of OI patients.
