Interdisciplinary Brain Injury Clinic
Kennedy Krieger Institute • 801 North Broadway • Baltimore, MD 21205
About Our Program:
Individuals who require integrated outpatient care are evaluated and followed through our interdisciplinary rehabilitation clinic. This clinic provides comprehensive rehabilitation evaluation, treatment and follow-up care for children, adolescents and young adults with a variety of general rehabilitation needs. Physicians, neuropsychologists, behavioral psychologists and educators meet with each child and family to assess both short- and long-term rehabilitation needs and to assist with treatment recommendations. This interdisciplinary team is especially appropriate for children with behavioral, cognitive and educational needs that occur after a brain injury. Common problems addressed include motor difficulties, school concerns, cognitive rehabilitation, and behavior management. This clinic serves children of all ages.
Note that physician-only clinics are also available for individuals who do not require interdisciplinary evaluation and treatment.
Primary Program Goals:
The overall goal is to help individuals function optimally and successfully in their home, school and community environments. This clinic provides comprehensive rehabilitation follow-up care to ensure that a child's physical, cognitive, behavioral and academic needs are being met. This consistency and continuity of care helps the family, child and treatment team detect problems or changes as soon as they occur and determine the appropriate interventions. This clinic also provides initial evaluations to those children not previously seen for rehabilitation services. Based on the team's assessment, children may be referred to other rehabilitation programs if appropriate, such as the inpatient or day treatment programs.
Many of the children seen through this clinic have previously received rehabilitation through an inpatient or day program at Kennedy Krieger Institute or another facility. Children are typically seen through this clinic at approximately three months post-discharge from another program within the Pediatric Rehabilitation Continuum of Care.
