This presentation focuses on learning about our children's emotion regulation, i.e., how children learn to deal with big, hard feelings like anger, frustration, and sadness. We will talk about ways to successfully help children through these feelings, teaching them the important life skill of calming down in tough moments. Join us to learn parenting techniques that foster emotionally healthy children. Modifications and unique strategies for implementing these concepts with children with autism spectrum disorders will be discussed.
- Understand what emotion regulation is, and why it is important for children.
- To understand how children learn to more appropriately deal with their big feelings, such as frustration, anger, and sadness.
- To learn strategies that help children manage emotions in a positive way throughout their lifetime.
- To discuss techniques that help children calm down while still giving clear boundaries and rules for good behavior.
Presenter: Laurie Chaikind, M.S.W., L.G.S.W.
Laurie Chaikind is a clinical social worker at CARD. She has worked as an Applied Behavior Analysis Instructor at the Ivymount School, Inc. in Rockville, MD, and was trained within Baltimore area schools as well as within several departments at Kennedy Krieger. Currently, she offers multiple programs within CARD focused on helping caregivers and their children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) enhance connection and social engagement. She is also passionate about her work using the Circle of Security © Parenting Program at CARD, in which she collaborates with parents to increase parenting techniques while building their child's long-term capacity for self-esteem and positive relationships.
