MCDD Eastern Shore Parent Trainings

The Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities (MCDD) at Kennedy Krieger Institute is pleased to announce a new program of education, training, and skill-building activities for low-income parents raising children with developmental disabilities on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The program was designed in response to a demonstrated need to improve and develop reliable networks of information that can be disseminated to parents and families. To address this need, the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council (DD Council) awarded the MCDD funding from October 1, 2012 through September 30, 2013 for two MCDD staff to provide 16 information sessions on the lower (Salisbury) and mid-shore (Easton) regions of the Eastern Shore. The target audience is hard-to-reach parents who experience a variety of barriers, including low-income, lack of transportation, lack of childcare, and lack of resources. The information sessions include eight topics related to parent advocacy and the inclusion of children with disabilities during the early childhood and school-age years. Mary Coster, the MCDD’s program director for Children’s Training and Services, leads the early childhood information sessions, and Maureen van Stone, the associate director of the MCDD, leads the school-age sessions.

The MCDD will provide information and resources from our State agencies and our sister organizations, as well as a $35 childcare stipend to each family who participates in an information session.
