2014 COPAA Conference: The Power of a Quality Education

The Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates (COPAA) Sixteenth Annual Conference will be held in Baltimore, Maryland at the Marriott Waterfront Hotel on March 6-9, 2014. COPAA is an organization of attorneys, advocates, and parents of children with disabilities who work to protect special education rights and provide a network to assist, train, and inform advocates, attorneys, parents, and related professionals. The conference draws over four hundred attendees from across the country for intensive training, workshops, and meetings. 

Notable conference speakers include:

  • Friday Night Opening Keynote Speaker: LeDerick Horne is an advocate, motivational speaker, entrepreneur, playwright, and poet. Mr. Horne will deliver “Beyond Classification.” This presentation provides strategies for increasing academic performance, self-determination, and self-advocacy skills of students with disabilities. 
  • Saturday General Session and Town Hall: Mark Weber, Esq., is a professor at DePaul University College of Law. Mr. Weber will deliver “Shifting the Conversation to Educational Quality and Outcomes” and will then moderate the Town Hall. 
  • Annual Case Law Review: Judith Gran, Esq., is an attorney who represents children and adults with disabilities. Ms. Gran has played a major role in improving community services for individuals with disabilities nationwide. Ms. Gran has presented the Year in Review for the Court of Appeals for COPAA each year since the first COPAA Conference. 

The conference agenda includes:

  • On Wednesday, March 5, 2014, there will be a networking event to benefit COPAA at Bertha’s Mussels (734 S. Broadway, Fells Point, MD, 21231). Ticket information and other event details will be posted on COPAA’s website. 
  • Participants can sign up for pre-conference all day sessions on Thursday, March 6, and Friday, March 7, 2014, at an additional cost. 
  • On Friday, March 7, 2014, the opening keynote speaker will present at 5:30 p.m., followed by a reception.
  • On Saturday, March 8, 2014, the COPAA Annual Fun 5k Run and one mile walk will take place at 7 a.m. The general session will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by four breakout sessions, a reception, and a silent auction.
  • Sunday, March 9, 2014, Judith Gran, Esq., will present the “Annual Case Law Review.” Following the Annual Case Law Review, there will be two additional breakout sessions.
  • Other notable speakers will be announced following confirmation of their participation in the conference.
