Parents Want Better Services for Transition-Age Children

The MCDD and Pathfinders for Autism conducted regional focus groups on the needs of transitioning young adults with autism spectrum disorder in the state of Maryland.

In 2016, forums were held on the Eastern Shore and in the Southern, Western, Central, and Capitol regions of Maryland. Parents expressed a need for more education, employment, and post-secondary programs; a need for more school involvement on career readiness, individualized education program (IEP) implementation, and transition planning; and a need for a more streamlined approach in accessing adult services (e.g., supplemental security income (SSI) and medical assistance (MA), DDA services, housing, or employment), including parent education and professional training.

Information from the forums is being used to inform future policy and program development for Maryland’s transitioning young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
