Updates

The Edmonston Police Department in Prince George’s County invited Maureen van Stone Esq., MS, associate director of MCDD, and Dr. Garland Jones, neuropsychologist at Kennedy Krieger Institute’s Center for Autism and Related Disorders, to deliver a 1.5 hour training on autism awareness on May 29, 2013, as part of the police department’s annual in-service training requirements. Ms. van Stone provided a presentation that included an overview of Kennedy Krieger and the MCDD, and provided each police officer with a packet of information and materials. Dr. Jones provided a comprehensive presentation that included substantive material, scenarios, video clips, and time for questions/answers. Each officer completed an MCDD evaluation and received an Edmonston Police Department post-test on the training. Sargent Richard Hartnett invited Ms. van Stone and Dr. Jones to replicate the training on September 25, 2013 for other police officers within the department.

On Thursday, June 27, 2013, the MCDD hosted three representatives from the Community Development Authority (CDA) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The guests included H.E. Khalid Mohammed Ali Al Kamda, director general of the CDA; Dr. Bushra Al Mulla, director of the Social Care and Inclusion Department; and Dr. Hussain Maseeh, social care expert. The goal of the meeting was to provide guests with an opportunity to meet members of the MCDD leadership team and staff, and learn more about our center and community partnerships, specifically Maggie’s Light, Inc. The three CDA social service leaders were particularly interested in the areas of early intervention, adult services, and the clinical model of educating individuals interested in working with people who have disabilities. Our guests also provided us with a video presentation, and information about their work in Dubai and new initiatives.

The MCDD will host Mallory Finn as a legal extern from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law this fall. Mallory is a third-year law student who worked for Project HEAL this past spring and summer.

Project HEAL will host two legal externs and two law student volunteers this fall. Lauren Peterson, a third-year law student from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, will earn four course credits for her work with Project HEAL. Lauren worked as a legislative extern for the MCDD this past spring. Caitlin Biggins, a third-year law student from the University of Baltimore School of Law, will earn three credits for her work with Project HEAL. Jaclyn Machometa, a second-year law student, will volunteer four hours per week and Hilary Tebelff, a part-time, first-year law student, will volunteer 12 hours per week, both attend the  University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law.

Awards

Mary Anne Kane Breschi, a new, part-time MCDD staff person, will be recognized by The Daily Record as a 2013 Innovator of the Year for her Community Works project. The Daily Recordrecognizes Maryland individuals and companies that have created a product, service, or process that has had a positive effect on their business, industry or community. Community Works, a project of Maggie's Light, Inc. and the MCDD, fosters family/professional relationships as it partners with Maryland families, local universities, and community agencies, to provide pre-professional “family perspective training”  throughout the state of Maryland.  Together we move education beyond the classroom and into the homes of Maryland families caring for children/youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN). Community Works provides undergraduate and graduates students in health, mental health, and disability related fields with the “experience of special needs” and its impact on the lives of children and youth and their families who care for them. Through such exposure, students gain insights and develop sensitivities to the complexities and challenges of everyday life for families caring for CYSHCN. Consequently, students are better prepared to serve and partner with families as they move throughout their professional lives.
