Partners in Change
Sometimes, in the focus of the moment, it’s easy to get caught up in the microscopic details and miss the bigger picture. For instance, we all know that quality of life is not just about funded services, but also housing, transportation, communities, church, friends, romance, and fun, to name a few.
That’s why, alongside community partners across the state, the Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities (MCDD) is working to create changes to the systems and services that allow the individuals we represent a chance to be included in the world around them.
This section of the MCDD newsletter will focus on bringing future topics to the forefront of our state discussions. Our goal is to collaboratively produce a newsletter with our sister agencies, the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council (DD Council) and Maryland Disability Law Center (MDLC), to highlight a particular topic. We also want to include the voices of consumers, self-advocates, family members, and others. We hope to provoke reflection for readers about a number of topics that can guide us in becoming more collaborative and aware.
We want to take on topics like loneliness and isolation, and write about how they are a natural part of our lives and how the developmental disabilities system struggles to address them. We hope we can work with consumers and family members across the state to capture their voices and concerns and to create a collective voice for our constituents across Maryland.
With feedback from our readers and partners, we want this part of our newsletter to offer a new perspective to our thoughts about change. We look forward to our partnership in this effort.
