DDA Training Contract at the MCDD
Since 1963, a national network of 67 University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research, and Service (UCEDDS)—including here in Maryland—have shared a common vision: A nation in which all Americans, including those with disabilities, can fully participate in their communities.
By working with people with disabilities, their families, state and local governments, and community providers, these UCEDDS have developed and supported numerous projects supporting that mission through training, technical assistance, service, research and information sharing—all with a focus on increasing the ability of communities to include individuals with developmental disorders.
To better accomplish these goals, UCEDDs also leverage their core funding to partner with other federal, state, and local resources. A prime example is a recent subcontract from the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) and Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council. This subcontract allows the MCDD to use its technology, personnel, and other resources to enhance and implement a coordinated statewide system of training for providers and families in Maryland. The MCDD is leveraging its existing funds in combination with DDA to achieve the project’s goals.
This subcontract will fund dozens of trainings over the next two years, with hundreds or even thousands of providers and family members benefitting from the information. Every region in Maryland will be included in these efforts to improve training and technical assistance. The MCDD has already implemented a new set of technologies for this system, including:
- Locally available training and presentation hardware (laptop, projector, and webcam);
- A new data system for tracking trainings and related data;
- Distance learning capacity to allow off-site participation in workshops and recording of events for future viewing; and
- Personnel to coordinate all of the trainings across all of the DDA Regions.
In the first six months of this subcontract, the MCDD has worked with the DDA Regional Training Coordinators to collect information and coordinate 87 trainings over 279 days with about 3,155 participants. To date, topics have included:
- Behavioral health
- Positive behavioral support
- Human resource management
- Self-determination for individuals with developmental disabilities
