Initiative to enable exploration of potential treatments in eight disease areas using existing compounds

Baltimore, Md. -- The National Institutes of Health has awarded a team from Kennedy Krieger Institute and the University of Washington with $2.9 million for the first year of an anticipated three-year grant to test a drug for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD).  The award is part of a $12.7 million funding initiative to match nine academic research groups with a selection of pharmaceutical industry compounds to explore new treatments for patients in eight disease areas, including Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia.
