Our ICSCI researchers and clinicians investigate and publish on various avenues of recovery, paralysis, and regeneration.

Clinical Research and Clinical Trials

The known benefits of exercise along with anecdotal and clinical case study evidence provides strong support for the value of Activity Based Restorative Therapies (ABRT) in helping individuals with spinal cord injury recover sensation, function, and mobility. The next step for spinal cord injury researchers will be evaluating the results of clinical trials designed to measure the therapies’ efficacy.

Basic Science Research

The International Center for Spinal Cord Injury (ICSCI) is fortunate to have a dedicated group of basic science researchers investigating the potential means to cure paralysis. The ICSCI basic science team utilizes in vivo (cellular) and in vitro (animal) models to study various aspects of neurological disease, injury, and recovery. Our ongoing areas of research focus include several integrated approaches to investigating targets for therapy.

The recent article published in Science entitled "Restoring voluntary control of locomotion after paralyzing spinal cord injury" by van den Brand et al.1 is a great basic scientific demonstration of the degree of plasticity and endogenous re-organization both above and below the injury level associated with recovery.

Marathon Training Tips

General Tips:

  • Start Slow: Many people get carried away and try to push themselves on their marathon training program from the very start. Avoid this -- it will lead to injuries.
  • Add 10 Percent Weekly: As a general rule, aim to increase your total running distance by a maximum of 10 percent per week.
  • Follow A Marathon Training Schedule: Track your goals, progress, and achievements by following a marathon training schedule.
