NIH Funds New Muscular Dystrophy Research At Kennedy Krieger; Part Of Large Initiative To Fund Collaborations With Industry

Initiative to enable exploration of potential treatments in eight disease areas using existing compounds

Baltimore, Md. -- The National Institutes of Health has awarded a team from Kennedy Krieger Institute and the University of Washington with $2.9 million for the first year of an anticipated three-year grant to test a drug for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD).  The award is part of a $12.7 million funding initiative to match nine academic research groups with a selection of pharmaceutical industry compounds to explore new treatments for patients in eight disease areas, including Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia.

All proceeds will benefit families in the Kennedy Krieger Feeding Disorders Program who have difficulty covering some of the costs incurred during their admission, such as blenders, car seats, transportation, and lodging.
