Down Syndrome: A Preventive Medical Checklist

Infancy (Birth–12 months)

  • Karyotype confirmation and genetic counseling -- newborn period
  • Cardiac evaluation and echocardiogram -- newborn period
  • SBE prophylaxis in susceptible children
  • Check newborn thyroid screen
  • Consider flu vaccine
  • Monitor: Cardiac, gastrointestinal and neurodevelopmental function
  • Audiology (hearing) evaluation -- by six months
  • Compile a medical information log
  • Appointment at a Down Syndrome Clinic

Childhood (1–12 years)

  • Recheck thyroid function tests -- y
