Use of an Educational Story to Prepare Children with Developmental Disabilities for Overnight Polysomnography
We hypothesize that use of an educational story with pictures illustrating overnight polysomnography procedure accompanied by simple narrative will be a cost-effective, readily accepted intervention that will contribute to successful completion of polysomongraphic procedures among children with disabilities. We propose identifying children with developmental disabilities through a subspecialty sleep medicine clinic for whom overnight polysomnography is clinically indicated, enrolling them and their parents, and randomizing participants to usual care (discussion of polysomnography with referring clinicians) or educational story intervention. We will then collect pre and post questionnaires from parents documenting change in knowledge of what is involved with their child's study. We will videotape setup of polysomnographic equipment the night of the study and quantify child affect and behaviors. We will evaluate whether successful study completion differs between the two groups.
