Psychiatric, Behavior, and Cognitive Profiles in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
This protocol requests permission to have access to a de-identified research dataset that was collected by the Simons Foundation, a private foundation in New York that focuses on advancing research in the sciences, including the study of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a chronic neurodevelopmental condition that is associated with significant impairment in functioning. As a result of having access to this dataset, the principal investigator -- along with her co-investigators -- will be able to conduct studies of the behavioral, cognitive, and psychiatric factors associated with ASD.
The principal investigator and her colleagues will pursue several lines of investigation using this dataset. Specifically, they will examine the following:
- The types of psychiatric and behavioral symptoms that cluster together in children with ASD at different stages of development
- The rates and risk factors for aggression in children with ASD
- The relationship between anxiety symptoms, cognitive level, and ASD severity
Other studies may be pursued based on the findings of these analyses. The principal investigator and her colleagues will conduct these investigations over the course of the next 10 years. This work will lead to a better understanding of the psychiatric and behavioral correlates associated with ASD, and will help to identify those at risk and develop better treatments.
