Ryan received his bachelor's degree in biological systems engineering from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and his PhD in biobehavioral science from the University of Florida under the advising of Dr. Chris Hass. He currently works as a post-doctoral research fellow with Dr. Amy Bastian at the Kennedy Krieger Institute/Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Ryan's research investigates how the human nervous system learns and stores new walking patterns in order to improve gait rehabilitation techniques in persons with neurological damage or disease. He is currently investigating how cognitive mechanisms influence locomotor learning. His studies investigate how different areas of the nervous system help us to learn and store new walking patterns.
