IDDRC Translational Neuroscience Core Services

The Translational Neuroscience Core provides consultation regarding experimental design and methods for preparation and analysis of histological material. It also provides training on equipment used for sectioning, staining, photographing, and analyzing histological material. Facilities include:

A brain histology facility,  providing training and access to equipment for tissue preparation

An imaging facility, providing access to advanced techniques, including confocal microscopy, for quantitating neurotransmitter, neuronal or glial specific and other relevant brain markers in tissue sections at the highest attainable level of resolution

An animal surgery area, providing investigators with access to a fully approved facility meeting the requirements for near sterile conditions now required for performing survival surgery

Upon request of its users, the Translational Neuroscience Core also performs specialized assays for plasmalogen, synthesis enzymes, phytanic acid oxidase assay, long- and very long-chain fatty acid beta-oxidation, catalase subcellular distribution, complementation analysis, plasma, cultured cell, and postmortem tissue very long-chain fatty acid analysis, plasma, postmortem tissue, and red blood cell membrane total lipid fatty acid analysis by GCMS separation, quantification and fatty acid analysis of phospholipids (including plasmalogens), analysis of lysophosphatidyl cholines, ceramides and sphingomyelins by LC-MSMS, quantification of N-acetyl-L-aspartate acid, and profiling of plasma medium-chain free fatty acids. General mass spectrometry services include quantification of plasma, urinary and CSF 3-methylglutaconic acid, Barth syndrome and mitochondrial transport studies, quantification of plasma and urine pipecolic acid, sterol analysis, and quantification of plasma and urine guanidinoacetate, creatine, and plasma dextromethorphan levels. Fibroblasts and post-mortem tissues from patients with peroxisomal disorders are also provided, and a database for peroxisomal disorders is maintained.

The Translational Neuroscience Core also has facilities for storing tissue (e.g., CSF, plasma, urine) for studies of specific populations, and performs immunofluorescence analyses of fibroblasts for a variety of disorders. Core faculty are also available for consultation and collaboration for the analysis and interpretation of data generated through the use of Core services.
