Although Educational Evaluations can be provided by your local public school, an Independent Educational Evaluation or Educational Consultation can provide the family and school with important additional information.

These services can be done independently, or in conjunction with other evaluations performed here at Kennedy Krieger Institute (KKI). Educational services are provided by special educators with advanced degrees and extensive expertise in a variety of conditions that can affect school performance. Educational Evaluations or Consultations are appropriate for children with school achievement problems, even if special education services are currently provided. Concerns regarding the appropriateness of educational placement and questions about effective instructional methods and strategies will be addressed.

Independent Educational Evaluation: An individual from preschool through high school may benefit from an Independent Educational Evaluation that will provide documentation of educational needs and recommendations for instructional strategies. Patients may be in an academic school program, or one designed for children with developmental disabilities.

Evaluations consist of administration of comprehensive standardized and criterion-referenced assessments that are designed to provide a learning profile. Results allow us to identify what is contributing to school problems and provide suggestions for effective instructional methods and strategies.

Evaluations include review of any pertinent records the family provides, consultations with other evaluators at KKI for the same patient, and a comprehensive written report.

Educational Consultation: Available to parents/caregivers who are seeking advice or suggestions about school placement or IEP concerns. A typical consultation involves a parent/caregiver interview, review of educational records or prior reports that the family provides, and an interview of the child’s teacher. An Educational Consultation does not include an evaluation of the child. A summary report of the consultation with recommendations is provided.

Appropriate patients for either Educational Service might have:

  • Learning Disabilities
  • Developmental Disabilities
  • Intellectual Disability
  • Acquired or Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Autism or
  • An undetermined educational problem
