Educational Evaluation Services
The Center for Development and Learning offers educational and consultation services conducted by educators with expertise in learning disabilities for individuals from preschool to adult ages. Referral is appropriate for school achievement problems (even if special education services are currently provided), concerns regarding the appropriateness of educational programs or placements and questions about effective instructional methods and strategies.
Evaluations are designed to obtain appropriate instructional and accommodative services, if warranted, for students with documented disabilities. More information about the services currently available through the Center for Development and Learning can be found below.
Educational Evaluations: Appropriate for patients who range from preschool (four years old) through tenth grade. Typically, these students are experiencing academic delays or struggling academically, most often in reading and written expression. Evaluations consist of comprehensive standardized and criterion-referenced assessments that are designed to document areas of academic strength and weakness, ascertain what is causing the problems and provide suggestions regarding effective instructional methods and strategies based on individual students needs
College Clinic Evaluations: Appropriate for adolescents (tenth through twelfth grades) and adults who are attending (or thinking about attending) post-secondary educational institutions (e.g., community colleges, colleges and universities or graduate programs). These individuals complete a two-part evaluation consisting of separate psychological and educational assessments that are scheduled closely together by Dr. Marge Fessler from Educational Services within the Center for Development and Learning and Dr. Thomas Ley from the Department of Neuropsychology. These evaluations are requested for a variety of reasons, including academic difficulty and/or suspected attentional disorders. Often, evaluation is requested to document and justify the need for accommodations on standardized benchmark examinations such as the SAT, GRE, MCAT or LSAT. Our comprehensive reports include evaluation findings, interpretation and recommendations for appropriate accommodations, referrals and academic support.
Consultation Services: Available to parents/caregivers who are seeking advice or suggestions about placement or IEP issues. A typical consulation involves a parent/caregiver interview, review of educational records and prior evaluation reports, and teacher interview. It does not include an evaluation of the child.
