Kennedy Krieger Athlete Youngest Member of 2004 U.S. Paralympic Track Team
(Baltimore, MD) - Born with spina bifida, Tatyana McFadden of Clarksville, MD will represent Kennedy Krieger's Physically Challenged Sports and Recreation program at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens, Greece. The first athlete to make it to the Paralympics while still training with Kennedy Krieger, 15-year-old Tatyana is also the youngest member of the 2004 U.S. Paralympic Track & Field Team. Tatyana will compete against a field of much older and more experienced women in the 100-, 200-, 400-, and 800-meter wheelchair races in Athens.
Just back from USA Track & Field Olympic Trials in Sacramento, CA, Tatyana took first place in the 800-meter race with a time of 1:56:22. She is also the current U.S. champion in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter events. On a recent trip to the International Olympic Trials in Atlanta, Tatyana missed qualifying for the final heat of the 800-meter event by less than a second. The 800-meter final heat will be run as an exhibition during the regular Olympic competition. The official Paralympic Games begin September 9, two weeks after the closing ceremonies of the traditional Olympic competition.
A division of the Kennedy Krieger Schools, the Physically Challenged Sports and Recreation program serves children with physical disabilities between the ages of 2 and 21. Activities include track and field, swimming, sled hockey, sitting volleyball, and wheelchair basketball and football. The program provides nearly all of the adaptive equipment necessary for children to participate in these sports.
Kennedy Krieger Institute is dedicated to helping children and adolescents with disabilities resulting from disorders of the brain achieve their potential and participate as fully as possible in family, community and school life.
