CARD: Outreach and Training for Parents and Professionals
Katherine C. Holman, Ph.D.
In 2002, the Autism Society of America documented that one of the greatest sources of stress on families of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) was the lack of trained professionals to effectively serve their child. A major emphasis in CARD is to address this problem. CARD offers a variety of unique venues to disseminate evidence-based knowledge. We aim to impart this information to educators, allied health professionals, and trainees in ways that optimize their application of new knowledge in their current practice.
Through our Outreach and Training division, we address areas that affect the lives of children with ASD and social-communication difficulties and their families, including, but not limited to: early detection of ASD and language impairment, diagnostic best practices, general in-services on autism and intervention, early intervention best practices, specific intervention strategy training (with or without guided practice experience), fidelity and supervision strategies for the classroom, empowering and working with families/parent training programs, and Early Achievements Early Intervention Model replication consultation, and research updates on causes and treatments related to autism. We also create outreach and training programs to match the specific needs and requests of the participants, provide student-specific consultations as well as consultations for classroom design and intervention programming.
