- REACH Team Reaches Out to the Community (Tuesday, March 9, 2004)
On March 6th, members of Kennedy Krieger’s REACH (Research and Education for Autism in Children) team volunteered at Port Discovery’s “Community and Family Health Fair.” Port Discovery is a “kid powered museum”, located in Baltimore, that features exhibits and hands on activities for children of all ages, who are typically developing or who have developmental disabilities. Saturday’s fair is part of a monthly endeavor to allow community organizations and businesses that promote health, to display their services to museum patrons while assimilating their desire to serve in the community, into a fun and non-threatening atmosphere.
The REACH team sponsored the “Child Developmental Milestones and Disability Awareness” exhibit, which featured hands on activities for younger and older children that promoted the acknowledgement of developmental milestones, the experience of persons with disabilities, and child-friendly neuropsychological tasks that allowed children to learn about how their brain works in different ways. During the day, Child Development experts, Katherine Holman, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, CARD, and Michelle Sullivan, Ph.D., CARD, were able to dialogue with parents who had concerns about their child’s motor or language development. At the conclusion of the day, more than 100 children and adults visited REACH’s exhibit and some families expressed an interest in learning more about the child development studies that are occurring at REACH, under the leadership of Dr. Rebecca Landa, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, Prinicipal Investigator and CARD Director. Efforts to continue this collaboration with Port Discovery and other community organizations, such as Whole Foods, are currently being discussed.
