Neurological Disorders

Neurology refers to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders of the nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord and nerves. Neurologists often diagnose and treat muscles disorders as well. Neurological disorders are common and can be life-threatening, like brain tumors and strokes, or less harmful (though potentially debilitating), like tension headaches and sleep disorders. The vast majority of disorders treated at Kennedy Krieger Institute involve the nervous system and are therefore neurological. However, since their manifestations and treatments are so diverse, neurological disorders have been divided into numerous sub-groups with their own specialized teams of physicians and therapists. Epilepsy specialists treat seizures, while neurogeneticists treat children with degenerative disorders of the brain. Physiatrists (specialists in in rehabilitative medicine) and neurodevelopmental pediatricians (who specialize in taking care of children with learning problems and cerebral palsy) help individuals with neurological problems achieve their maximum potential.
