Promoting Advocacy Around the Country

Representatives of People on the Go Maryland (POG) attended the 2017 conference of the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities in Salt Lake City, Utah, with partners from the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council.

The conference, with its “A Quality Life: Count Me In!” theme, explored the many aspects that figure into creating a quality life for people with developmental disabilities. POG delivered a presentation, “Partners in Advocacy: State Self-Advocacy Leadership and Developmental Disabilities Councils,” which focused on the group’s relationships with developmental disabilities organizations and other stakeholders around Maryland.

POG also discussed funding strategies that have helped it grow, and Ken Capone, POG’s public policy director, discussed the Equal Employment Act (EEA). Colleagues in other states, Capone said, have asked POG many questions about the legislative process for getting the EEA passed and about the opposition POG faced in supporting the EEA.

POG representatives also met with Melissa Ortiz, commissioner of the Administration on Disabilities within the Administration on Community Living, to discuss topics including Medicaid expansion, community living, and home- and community-based services.
